How to get your coffee cup read from a photo
Photograph the inside of your cup from straight above in good light and send it to Fincanya in ChatGPT: it outlines and numbers the shapes in the grounds, and ChatGPT names each one from a lexicon of 407 traditional shapes. Can AI read coffee grounds? It can find the shapes and give their traditional meanings, but neither AI nor anyone else can read the future in them, so treat it as entertainment.

Step by step
- Drink and turn the cup over. Make your wish silently, turn the cup onto its saucer and wait a few minutes for the grounds to dry.
- Take the photo. Shoot the inside of the cup from straight above, so the rim looks like a circle and the cup fills the frame. Use daylight or white light without flash glare. Add the saucer if you like.
- Send it in ChatGPT. Attach the photo and say “Read my coffee cup”.
- Look at the numbered shapes. The shapes are outlined and numbered by zone (rim, middle, bottom, saucer), each with its name and traditional meaning.
- Correct and save. Tap a shape you see differently to rename it. Save the reading in your fal defteri, or share it with a link.
Can AI read coffee grounds?
AI can find shapes in a photo and match them to their traditional meanings. Nobody, AI or human, can read the future in coffee grounds: cup reading is entertainment and tradition.
In Fincanya the shapes aren't invented by AI: the photo goes through the same image processing every time, so the same photo gives the same shapes. ChatGPT only names each shape from the lexicon and passes on the lexicon's meaning.
Ways to get a reading from a photo
A photo of your cup can be read in a few different ways. How they differ:
| A friend or a reader in person | Fortune-reading apps | A photo in ChatGPT, no plugin | Fincanya (in ChatGPT) | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Who reads it | The person holding your cup | Depending on the app, human readers or AI | ChatGPT interprets the photo itself | Fincanya finds and numbers the shapes; ChatGPT names each from a lexicon of 407 shapes |
| You see the shapes on your cup | If they point them out | Depends on the app | Usually described in words only | Yes: each shape is outlined and numbered on the photo |
| Same cup, same shapes | Depends on the reader | Depends on the app | Can differ each time you ask | Yes: the photo is processed the same way every time |
| Where meanings come from | The tradition the reader knows | Depends on the app | The model's general knowledge | Our written lexicon of traditional meanings, word for word |
| The conversation | Face to face; the tradition at its warmest | Written | Written | Written; tap a shape to correct it |
Fortune-reading apps work very differently from one another, so we describe them as a group rather than one by one.

Questions
- Is there a ChatGPT app for coffee cup reading?
- Fincanya is one: send it a photo of your cup in ChatGPT and it outlines the shapes and names them from its lexicon of traditional meanings.
- Does it cost anything?
- No. Fincanya is free to use in ChatGPT, and so is the fal defteri.
- What happens to my photo?
- We keep a cropped copy of the cup for 24 hours; if you save the reading it stays in your fal defteri until you delete it. Details on the privacy page.
- Should I type my wish?
- No. Tradition keeps the wish (niyet) secret, and Fincanya never asks for it.
- Should I photograph the saucer too?
- If you like. Shapes on the saucer are traditionally read for your wish and home.
Fincanya is for entertainment and tradition; it makes no predictions.
