How to read a Turkish coffee cup
To read a Turkish coffee cup, drink the coffee, make a silent wish, turn the cup upside down onto its saucer and let it cool, then read the shapes the grounds leave, zone by zone. By tradition, shapes near the rim speak of the near future, the middle of the present, the bottom of the past and the saucer of your wish and home; it's a tradition for conversation and fun, not a prediction.

Step by step
- Make and drink the coffee. Brew a Turkish coffee with plenty of grounds and foam. Drink until the grounds are left at the bottom.
- Make a wish. By tradition the wish (niyet) is made silently and kept to yourself.
- Turn the cup over. Put the saucer on top of the cup and turn both over together. In many homes the cup is turned towards yourself.
- Let it cool. Wait a few minutes until the grounds dry. Some people rest a ring on the upturned cup to cool it faster.
- Look at the zones. Lift the cup. The rim speaks of the near future, the middle of the present and the bottom of the past; shapes on the saucer are read for your wish and home.
- Name the shapes. When you see a bird, a road, a fish or a heart in the grounds, look up its traditional meaning. The same shape can be read differently from one home to the next.
- Talk about it. A coffee reading is a conversation with whoever reads your cup. Enjoy it; don't take it seriously.
